by bestcrossbows

The use of crossbows has been around since the ancient times. An alternative choice to the classic bow and arrow, crossbows do not require rigorous training to use. In recent times, crossbows are largely used in archery and hunting.

Many young people are becoming more and more interested in the use of crossbows whether for sports or leisure. With the many available crossbow models available in the market today, choosing the best especially intended for young users can be quite confusing. If you’re looking for the best youth crossbows, then worry no more. This article is specifically meant for you. We’ll take a look at the factors to consider before buying a youth then review the top 10 best youth crossbows that are worth buying today.

Factors To Consider When Buying The Best Youth Crossbows

There are certain things to be considered to make sure that a crossbow is well suited for the youth. Here are some of them:

Size and Weight

When buying a youth crossbow, size, and weight matter. It is important that they are able to carry and fire it safely and comfortably. A 50-lb crossbow may not be very appropriate for a young user as he or she may have a difficulty handling it. The ideal youth crossbow should have an adjustable butt stock and should weigh less than 15 lbs.

Safety

All weapon have risks. It is just right to consider the user’s safety, first and foremost, when choosing a crossbow for our children.
Youth crossbows are supposed to have high-quality trigger and safety mechanism. An automatic trigger feature is essential for a youth crossbow, as this will prevent unintentional trigger pulling. The trigger system should ideally be made completely out of strong and sturdy metal.

Prize

A practical consideration in choosing the best youth crossbow is the value for your money. Especially if it is your child’s first time trying out a crossbow, the price point can be a deciding factor, as you are not sure yet if he or she is going to enjoy the weapon or maybe get bored after a use or two. There are many crossbows suited for younger users that are competitively priced.

Function

It is important to be specific with how you intend to use a crossbow so you can choose the model that suits you best. Is it for purely hunting? If so, the size of animals you intend to hunt and the estimated range of distance will matter greatly when choosing a crossbow. Is it for leisure crossbow archery? Models for archery vary greatly in many different aspects than the ones for hunting or shooting.

Compound and Recurve Crossbows

Generally speaking, compound crossbows are more appropriate for younger users because it is easier to use and typically has higher arrow speed. They are also more portable and narrower, thus making it more convenient to carry and use. However, the presence several moving cables and pulleys may result to potential failures.

On the other hand, recurve types are also simple and quite straightforward, as there are no cables and pulleys that need adjusting. This also means that recurve crossbows are more reliable and have fewer chances of falling. Despite this, these types of crossbows are usually heavier and wider and present with slower arrow speed.

The Best Recurve Crossbows of 2017

by bestcrossbows

Hunting success mostly depends on the experience of the hunter. One may have some lucky shots to begin with but striking a few in a row requires skills and years of practice. The choice of weapon plays a role in this game as well. Deciding which weapon to use is crucial for the overall outcome of your hunting session. Many people nowadays choose crossbows over regular compound bows and here is why.

Crossbow VS Compound bow

A hunter faces many challenges in the woods where the type and quality of his weapon might decide whether he scores or not. Younger, inexperienced hunters as well as disabled hunters use crossbows for their reliability and easier usage. However, besides the many advantages a crossbow has over a compound bow, it also carries significant disadvantages.

Taking a look into the pros of using a crossbow, you will notice it is fairly easier to control than a compound bow. Reason being, a cocked crossbow stays at full draw and does not require any effort by the hunter to keep it in that position which allows the hunter to move freely and focus on aiming and shooting. This feature also makes it easier to shoot from sitting positions. The sitting or kneeling positions call for more accurate shots because having a rest of some kind makes your aim much more precise.

Crossbows feature extremely heavy draw weights where the usual weight is 100 to 200 pounds while a compound bow counts up to 50 to 80 pounds. They are significantly larger and their shape makes it difficult to carry it around. Because of its weight and size, the crossbow is more difficult to shoot on the run. Fast movements noticeably decrease accuracy and precision. Therefore, having some kind of a rest or support while shooting a crossbow will significantly increase the chances of a successful shot. However, that is not the only thing affected by its size and weight. For the same reason, crossbows are more difficult and slower to reload which, again, makes it impossible to be effective on the run.

Back to the positives, crossbows can shoot much faster than regular compound bows. Arrows shot from a compound bow can reach speeds up to 250 to 330 feet per second while bolts fired from a crossbow go up to 350 to 450 feet per second. Because of this, the shots are not only faster but harder on the target. However, the speed does not affect the range of the shot that much. Crossbows still remain short-range weapons with 40 to 50 yards being the maximum effective range. That’s where we come across another disadvantage. Short-range shooting requires minimizing all the noise in order to prevent the animal from running away. Unfortunately, crossbows are much louder than compound bows which is something a hunter would have to deal with at short-range.

What to look for in a recurve crossbow?

Searching for quality is obviously the first on the list. Since crossbows are designed simply without extra equipment such as cables and pulleys they are easier to use in different outdoor conditions. That already screams quality to begin with but there are few details to look for in order to have the best experience crossbow hunting.

Higher end recurve crossbows allow you to change the bowstrings by yourself without needing a press as well as to tune your crossbow the way you prefer it. This type of “customization” will significantly improve your experience with the chosen crossbow because of different factors. These factors include your height, weight, physical strength as well as age and physical condition. When choosing a crossbow it is important to find one that fits your needs best. If the crossbow draws more weight than you can handle, there is a possibility of injury when trying to load it. Go for one which is most comfortable for your back and shoulders because shifting and balancing weight with an unsuitable crossbow can cause serious damage to you your body. Longer crossbows are much harder to handle, especially for disabled hunters or those with upper limb issues. Choosing shorter models can easily fix this problem since they are much lighter and more comfortable to hold.

The Best Recurve Crossbow Models

Now that we got the differences between crossbows and compound bows out of the way, as well as the things to look for when purchasing a crossbow, it is time to focus on specific models and what they have to offer. On today’s market there are hundreds of models to choose from, each differing in small details and features. At first it might seem as though all the little things are irrelevant but it’s exactly those details that make a certain crossbow suitable for you. If a one hunter doesn’t find a certain model suitable it doesn’t mean that it is any lower in quality. It simply means that everyone has different needs when it comes to choosing a crossbow. So remember, look for the model that fits you best and don’t compare your choices to other hunters’ choices when it comes to this matter. Now let’s take a look at four different crossbow model reviews!

SA Sports Fever Crossbow Package

Starting off with an entry level model, the SA Sports Fever Crossbow Package is the perfect option for those who are not yet sure whether to pursue crossbow hunting. The quality of the model is extremely satisfying considering the fact that it is a low budget crossbow going for only 199.99$. Designed for beginners who are still testing the waters, this crossbow is suitable for deer hunting. It’s speed of 240 feet per second wont be enough for larger targets such as bears.

However, just because it’s cheaper does not mean you wont have a great experience hunting in the woods. This crossbow model is extremely easy to maneuver with its light weight of only 4.85 lbs. The package comes with the full set of accessories needed for a hunting session including the quiver, the scope, a padded sling and the rope cocking device as well as aluminium bolts. The whole assembling process shouldn’t take longer than 20 minutes and you will quickly be ready to hunt.

One minor disadvantage is the fact that aluminium bolts are not the best choice for deer hunting so you might want to get some new ones. It is important to remember that accuracy is not 100% guaranteed and consistent with this model. After all, it is one of the cheaper ones out there and you cannot expect it to be fully professional but for those just starting out, it is more than enough to get some great practice and experience.

Excalibur Matrix 380 Xtra Crossbow Package

Jumping straight up to a high ranked model, Excalibur Matrix 380 Xtra is the perfect crossbow for the silent, pray stalking game. Highly maneuverable with its light weight of 5.9 lbs, it is one of the deadliest hunting weapons out there. Of course, this high quality comes for a higher price of 1099.99$. Nothing on this model is made cheaply since it is equipped with the highest quality accessories. It comes with the Tact-zone scope that will improve your hunting game by up to 80%. The detachable quiver is also a great addition especially in certain hunting situations. This model is designed for experienced professionals who have been in the game long enough to know all the little hunting tricks. The experience is necessary to make the best use out of this high quality equipment.

The arrows which come in the package come with field points and are on the higher end of the market. You wont need to make any additional purchases to complete this set because everything included is made to make your hunting experience a blast. However, the assembly of this crossbow might take some time. You will have to use Allen keys for mounting the limbs as well as to string the bow. It might come stringed in some cases but it depends on where you are purchasing it. The maximum range this crossbow offers is 50 yards which is more than enough to enjoy a good hunting session. With its quality mechanism, this model is almost perfect. Other than the fact that illumination on the scope may fade a bit, there are no major disadvantages that could make you change your mind when purchasing this crossbow.

Excalibur Matrix Mega 405 Crossbow Package

At the price of 1299.99$ this might be one of the most powerful crossbows on the market today. It gives you 127 feet per lbs of kinetic energy which is powerful enough to compete in the biggest hunting games out there. The deadly velocity of the Matrix Mega 405 calls for the best hunting experience you can get, which makes it well worth the money.

The package comes with the set of quality equipment including the rope cocking device, a suppressor, a quiver and four bolts with field points. Even though the crossbow is pre-strung, the assembly process requires some time. Luckily, an instruction manual and a DVD come with the package to make the assembling easier for you.

If you have a high budget and the wish for perfect hunting experience, the Matrix Mega is the best option for you. It’s well built mechanism happens to be the fastest one out there. No other crossbow matches the features of this model which has a consistent accuracy up to 60 yards of length. However, there are a few cons among all these positive features. The package does not come with a bow stringer and the crossbow itself has a heavy cocking weight. These minor setbacks wont be a problem for professionals who know how to handle this type of equipment. As with any high end crossbow, experience is the key.

Excalibur Matrix Micro 335

Last but not least, the award winner for the best overall recurve crossbow is designed to give comfort and safety in hunting situations. The well built mechanisms are one of the most reliable ones out there, guaranteeing the best accuracy and stealth. Going for the price of 949.99$ the package includes the scope, the vibration suppressor, cocking device, the quiver and the bolts.

The assembling process is very simple with clear manual instructions included in the package. There is no additional work needed to be done, all you need to do is make sure all parts are tightened and mounted properly. Also being a light weight model, the Matrix Micro has an even accuracy up to 50 yards in distance. Its easy maneuverability allows for easier use in tight spaces which is very convenient for short-range hunting.

The only downside of this model would be the heavy cocking weight. As it is with other models mentioned above, an experience hunter would know how to deal with this matter without issues. All in all, this model is one of the higher ranked ones on the market with it’s price being somewhere in the middle. It might be the most suitable one for those looking for both good price and good quality.

Final thoughts

After reviewing the four best crossbows on the market, it is important to remind you that you need to look for the model that suits you best personally. Choosing which is the perfect crossbow for you is completely up to your personal preferences so don’t let other hunters’ opinions influence yours too much.

After purchasing your crossbow, the next thing to focus on is the maintenance. Taking good care of your equipment will make it last longer and stay in good condition. To prevent any damage make sure you wax the cable and clean the bow after using. One thing that is not included in any of the mentioned packages is the crossbow case. It is recommended to invest into a safety case to prevent your equipment being damaged during transportation or storing. Unfortunately, this accessory does not come with the crossbows but it is wise to spend some extra money on this matter and prevent possible fixing costs in the future. Finally, an occasional checking of all the parts of the bow is necessary to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Practicing enough to be competent with your crossbow will be difficult on your bolts, and you want to make sure that the ones you use in the field will perform the task of the game.

Choosing the right bolt for the bow

Just consider the pulling weight, the impact power and the brand of your weapon. Onion manufacturers determined the type, length, and weight of the arrows to be used for their product.

Using an arrow that is not compatible with your bow requirement can result in damage to the bow or even a weakened boom that can lead to death. Therefore, it is best to choose an arrow according to the manufacturer’s specification. You can also choose between aluminum and coal arrows. Both are fast and consistent, although carbon tends to be more durable.

How Fast Can a Crossbow Bolt Get?

Many people in the community of hunters and archers have discussed whether crossbows are faster than complex bows. The fact is that this discussion from time immemorial has contributed to crossbows, up to a certain point. You might have noticed that I implicitly added “up to a point” in the previous sentence. The reason for this is the fact that, compared to compound and traditional bows, the crossbow speed of crossbows slowly decreases or slows down at great distances. This makes them less ideal when they are in competition with arrows, and the goals are much further than their intended range. But from raw strength and speed, the crossbow is the king in the categories of 30 to 40 yards, and you will have to look for a bow with a pulling weight equal to or much heavier than the crossbows.

So, how quickly does the crossbow quarrel to reach a specific goal that is 30-40 yards from it? Well, there are many things that can affect the speed of a quarrel when they are on the move, and among these factors, there will be a power strike. The power stroke is the length at which the string moves all the way up to its rest position. Together with the traction weight, these two factors determine the speed of bolts or quarrels that shoot from crossbows. Therefore, bearing in mind these two factors, anyone who would like to get the fastest crossbows on the market should only make sure that they get a weapon that has the right combination of these two factors and they can easily commit the quickest killings that they usually track down.

One of the advantages of a bolt or quarrel that moves fast is the fact that as soon as it hits, the target immediately feels the impact force. This greatly facilitates the crippling or killing of the game, because you do not want the game to survive after your first shot. If you have plans to remove the skin from an animal, then you do not want the skin to have a lot of holes in it, right? It also reduces the suffering of the animal, because no one wants the game to win and, possibly, also destroy their coats when they were hit. Also, there are other factors that can affect speed, such as the speed and direction of the wind, but usually they are considered insignificant.

Conclusion

If you are a beginner, we suggest choosing the simplest model. Practice with these first, before moving on to more complex bolts. Aluminum bolts are great for practice purposes, while coal bolts are better suited for hunting. Also, make sure that your bolt comes with the appropriate heads that you need.

In fact, some of them come with notable upswing that is all customized to suit the unique needs of the users, especially when on shooting in the outdoors. Faced against this backdrop in improvements, it’s no wonder the conventional shooting methods are falling in importance while the outstanding ones are coming into the limelight.

Benefits of Crossbow Scope

Enhanced accuracy

Accuracy is perhaps one of the most important factors when it comes to using a crossbow. In practice, the goal is to use the least amount of effort and time it takes to aim and successfully hit your target. This is because one of the most challenging tasks for a shooter when in the range is having the ability to maintain your accuracy results at optimal levels. While the scope might be challenging to use at first, over time, the user gets accustomed to using it and can thereby start to reap the results of using this tool.

Increased shooting range

Another significant benefit of using the crossbow scope are that it increases your overall shooting range as well. Simply put, you can hit targets that would have otherwise been challenging by using the conventional methods of shooting. By the same token, some of the more advanced rifles scope with advanced features such as laser sighting and zooming functionalities that make them especially ideal for taking down all types of targets. Similar to any undertaking in life, you want to see improvements in your results each time. As you become accustomed to using the scope, you may notice that your results also improve as well.

Improved self-confidence

Perhaps one other fantastic benefit of owning a crossbow scope is that it plays a major role in your state of mind when it comes to producing results in the crossbow range. This is because the scope is a compact sized tool that offers solid performance and impressive convenience each time. What is more remarkable is that it doesn’t matter whether you are a novice or advanced shooter in the range. A good scope always increases your sense of confidence and results.

Now that you are aware of the multiple benefits of having a crossbow scope for shooting, it is important to know what factors to consider before deciding to make an investment. Crossbow scopes do not come cheap. While there are some that run as low as $70, there are some that are well over $460 and buying one and deciding it is not right for you is a waste of time and money. Here are a few points that you should research before you decide to buy:

Durability

If you are a regular hunter or archer, you are going to want to make sure that you buy a crossbow scope that is going to last you longer than a few hunting seasons. Make sure that you have a secure casing around your crossbow scope in case you drop it or it bangs into something. It may be a good idea to invest in a case for it, just like you would your cell phone. Currently, many crossbow scopes now offer limited-time warranties, which may be a good investment for the, particularly heavy-handed hunter.

Ease of Use

With all of the mental concentration that goes into lining up a shot within range, the last thing you want to be worried about is fiddling with your crossbow scope. Look for a scope that is easy to mount on top of your crossbow and that can adjust for changes in elevation, wind, and pressure.

Magnification and Field of View

These two points will vary based on which crossbow scope you decide to invest in. Just like glasses help people to see objects from a distance they couldn’t normally see, the magnification of a crossbow scope gives one almost superhuman abilities to pinpoint a target. Generally, the maximum scope magnification is 32X, but be careful, the higher the magnification, the less light the scope will be able to gather. Field of view is also extremely important. This determines how much you can see at one time, while magnification determines how far you can see at one time. However, the higher level of magnification the narrower your field of vision will be. So make sure to keep that in mind when you are trying to hit a distant target.

Size

Just like it is much easier for photographers to carry a camera around his or her neck rather than transport an entire suitcase of equipment, your crossbow scope should be small and light enough to be easy to travel with. It is also important to adjust for your own height and weight. If you are 5’0” and 86 lbs. you may want to consider looking for a crossbow scope that is drastically different than someone who is 6’5” and 300 lbs.

Now that you have all the specifications that are suited to your needs, a lot of the remainder of the crossbow purchasing process comes down to preference and what meets your needs as a hunter or archer. Although some sources claim there are up to four main types of crossbows, there are two overarching categories: Red Dot Scopes and Optic Scopes.

Red Dot Scopes

Red Dot Scopes work similarly to how most people would imagine a sniper rifle. A Red Dot Scope does not provide any additional magnification, but just has a series of red dots for shooters to pinpoint their targets. The red dots allow even the most beginner hunters or archers to line up their shot easily and can help with practice for shooting at different ranges. This type of scope is highly recommended for the novice shooter.

The benefits of a red dot scope include working well in low light, for example, if you are hunting in the evening, a larger field of view because there is no magnification in the equation to obstruct the field of vision, and easy centering for fast accuracy. The red dots easily allow shooters to center the target and fire quickly.

Optic Scopes

Optic scopes rely on magnification rather than a series of red dots to match the target and pinpoint the accuracy of a shot. Optic scopes use something called reticles. Reticles are used in similar ocular devices such as microscopes or telescopes used to locate objects or for accurate measurements. They look more like thin lines of fibers rather than the circles that are used for Red Dot Scopes.

The benefits of an optic scope are that you can actually see what you are shooting much more clearly, giving you a better sense of accuracy and it is much easier to shoot from a distance, rather than with a red dot scope which is better for shooting closer targets.

Now that you have a wealth of information concerning how crossbow scopes can enhance your shooting game, what points to consider before making the big investment and what types of scopes are out there, it is time to reveal our list of the Top 10 Crossbow Scopes of 2017. Largest Collection of Crossbows

by bestcrossbows

bd884c3bd01d6bfe71c60f8335d8463e

Crossbows are not only flexible and accurate tools, they are also whole lot of fun. Additionally, they’re an excellent way of introducing young or inexperienced hunters to the sport. Crossbows are also handy when it comes to maintaining the physically impaired hunters in the game. Having said that, do not make the mistake of contemplating that crossbows are not serious business.

The History of Crossbows

Historically, crossbows played such a huge role in the warfare of the Mediterranean, Europe and East Asia. The invention of crossbow in China – ancient China – brought about a drastic shift in the projectile weaponry roles. The conventional arrow and bow had been a specialized weapons system for long. It required such a huge degree of expertise, physical strength and lifetime training to operate with utmost efficiency.

In most cultures, many people considered bowmen a superior and separate caste. This was regardless of the fact that they were drawn from common class. Their archery skill set was developed essentially from birth. It was almost impossible to reproduce an outside pre-established cultural tradition that many nations lacked.

By contrast, the large collection of crossbows was the premier projectile weapon. It was cheap, simple as well as physically undemanding to be operated by the masses. Thus, it enabled virtually any nation to lay out a potent force of crossbowmen.

Today’s Crossbows

Today, a good number of hunters utilize them to tackle or hunt the biggest game imaginable. This can include Kodiak brown bears, caribou and moose. At this level, you might need something bigger.

Crossbows vary in pulling mechanisms, sizes, and shapes. Most importantly, they boast different shooting speeds and calibers. You can have them for different purposes such as sports, hunting or any leisure activities.

Crossbows can greatly vary. You can have a mammoth 200-plus pound monster or even a ‘tactical’ 50-pound pistol crossbow. The golden rule is that almost anything that is not a toy is capable for small game. For instance, at 150 pounds, you can harvest whitetails, turkeys and coyotes. With your 175-pound crossbow, you may need to set your eyes on animals such as small bears and elk.

Then you find your way into the big crossbow league. Here are the 5 mammoth crossbows that are considered the closest when it comes to the contemporary equivalent of an arbalest.

Excalibur Matrix Mega 405

The Excalibur Matrix Mega 405 boasts a draw weight of 290 pounds. It features a velocity of 405 FPS. Its kinetic energy is 127.51 foot pounds.

Kodabow Big Rhino

The Kodabow Big Rhino has a draw weight of 225 pounds. It features a velocity of 355 FPS. Its kinetic energy is 98 foot-pounds.

Mission MXB-Dagger XB

The Mission MXB-Dagger XB has a draw weight of 220 pounds. It features a velocity of 340 FPS. Its kinetic energy is 77 foot-pounds.

Carbon Express Covert CX2

The Carbon Express Covert CX2 brings with it a draw weight of 200 pounds. It has a velocity of 385 FPS. Its kinetic energy is 142 foot pounds.

Barnett Jackal Crank Cocking Device

by bestcrossbows

For avid fans of hunting, owning a superb crossbow is an integral part of the sport. A good huntsman knows that satisfaction comes from getting a perfect aim of the target, and the Barnett brand, particularly their Jackal Crossbow delivers just that.

The Barnett Jackal is a unique innovation to the company’s crossbow lineup, and is a sure favorite because of its lightweight and compact design. The package contains disassembled parts for safety, but a good five minutes and the instruction guide are all it takes to secure the bolts with an Allen wrench.

The 32.5-inch x 26.5-inch Jackal weighs only 7.7 lbs. which is definitely an easy carry for long hunting trips. This crossbow has a picatinny rail for easy mounting, and a divided grip for that snug and secure hand grip. It has Barnett’s ADF MIM trigger with a smooth pull of 3.5 pounds and about 150 lbs. of draw weight. Add its almost negligible weight to the initial speed of arrows that span up to 315 FPS, and you will see the remarkable power this crossbow has to offer. The package also comes with three 20-inch arrows and a built-in quiver for the hunter’s convenience. With its entire outstanding features, it’s no wonder why the Jackal is called the reasonably priced high-end Barnett crossbow.

The accuracy of the Jackal is one feature that receives praise from the users. It has almost no recoil, a feat that helps in acing that target shot. A premium red-dot sight of the Jackal provides for a more accurate shot at great distances, but users prefer to accessorize with the standard Barnett rope-cocking device to ensure the precision of their shots. This device reduces the poundage pull by half, and makes for an even easier hunting experience. By using it, the owner is guaranteed to have sides that are equally pulled, thereby increasing the accuracy. Hunters as young as 13 years old can cock the crossbow with ease using this roping accessory.

As it has a unique setup unlike many of the Barnett crossbows, the Jackal ideally cannot yet be equipped with a Barnett crank crocking device. This accessory can be permanently added to a crossbow that reduces tension by a significant amount and enables an almost effortless pull. It would have been more expedient to have a Barnett Jackal crank cocking device, but users have created a setup that works well without attaching the screws of the average crank enhancement.

With proper care and maintenance of the Jackal and its accessories, the owner will surely be able to use this crossbow for many hunts without sacrificing its accuracy. The Barnett brand offers excellent warranty service, and a sleek and military panache stock that speaks for the quality of a crossbow that deserves a place in your arsenal.

All in all, the Barnett Jackal Crossbow is a worthy tool that can be added to your collection. Its power is what makes this a devastating weapon for the prey, and an excellent instrument of pursuit. Experts and beginners alike can enjoy a leisurely trip outdoors or a serious hunting game by using the Jackal. It is great for target shooting, fishing or the point-and-stalk method that leaves any hunter craving for more. The Barnett Jackal is made by hunters for hunters, and is greatly recommended especially for you.

How Deadly Is A Crossbow?

by bestcrossbows

images (13)

Many centuries ago when crossbows made their debut on the medieval battlefield, they were swiftly denounced as being ‘unholy’ by the Pope due to their raw killing power. Even these models – primitive by today’s standards – were capable of piercing the plate metal worn by knights and nobles, and with the added advantage of require far less skill or training than that expected from a typical archer. With one shot a peasant could slay a nobleman, and in large part this started the demise of heavy armored cavalry which had otherwise dominated the battle.

A crossbow is a weapon without pretension, capable of delivering an extremely powerful bolt at high velocity, making it naturally in it’s own right potentially a highly dangerous weapon. However there are caveats that need to be considered as by far are all crossbows of similar quality. In order to measure how deadly a crossbow can be, we’ll need to address the question from a number of perspectives.

Crossbows & Power

To effectively kill a target it’s obviously necessary to deliver enough force that will ensure a fatal impact. It’s important here to distinguish between varieties of crossbow, and for sake of purpose we’ll refer to them as ‘modern’ – i.e contemporary hunting bows usually of recurve style – and ‘compound’ the more traditional style that springs to mind when most people think about crossbows.

Speed is obviously essential when considering deadliness and a modern crossbow will generally deliver a greater fps than classic models. It’s not uncommon to find even middle of the range modern variants that are capable of easily breaking 350-400 fps, which over closer ranges isn’t far short of a .223 rifle (more on which below). During the medieval battles discussed during the introduction, in many cases the crossbow bolt wouldn’t pierce the heavier armor – but the actual force/velocity of impact was enough to kill the cavalryman it was supposed to protect. Modern crossbows are much more powerful – so it’s fair to say that in regards to sheer power, crossbows are absolutely lethal weapons.

Accuracy & Deadliness

Of course it’s not much use having a death dealing weapon if you can’t get it to aim straight, and this has always been a major issue with crossbows throughout history. To become a bow archer in a medieval army was literally a career decision – it took a lifetime of learning, practice and physical training to be able to rapidly release accurate arrows. On the other hand a crossbowman only needed to point and release – the crossbow mechanism did almost all of the heavy work; the only problem being that crossbows were only effective in terms of accuracy over very short distance.

This is why crossbows were frowned upon on the battlefield, and usually used by the lowest rungs of the military force. The main problem causing this is the sheer inconsistency of the operating pulley’s – which are susceptible to even the slightest change in balance, direction, bolt weight and of course wind. Only in the last couple of decades has crossbow technology developed to such a degree that components are now highly engineered and geared specifically towards consistent delivery, but this remains an issue with lower range models. Saying this, with only a little practice a well sighted, good quality modern crossbow can still quickly become an accurate and lethal weapon even in totally inexperienced hands.

Crossbow & Bow – Comparative Deadliness

As mentioned above a powerful modern style crossbow can deliver as deadly a force as a small caliber rifle, and will only be let down in direct comparison in regards to very long range shooting. A much fairer comparison is with a classic bow – and there’s little doubt that in a layman’s hands the crossbow is by far a more dangerous weapon.

Classic archery requires huge amounts of practice. Even with modern sights and range finders it’s still extremely difficult to hit a moving target, whereas the principles of firing a crossbow are much more aligned with modern sensibilities. Being able to essentially point and fire – just as we would with a firearm – is even today the great leveler when it comes to making crossbows a much more accessible form of weaponry. Sure, it may lack a little of the class of a bow and arrow – but then, they’ve been saying that for a thousand years!

Also, if people would like to do a little more detailed research on their own, they can look at the features that make up an accurate crossbow and do some of their own comparisons. Here’s some of the features that people should look for,”

High FPS

One of the first features that the shopper should look for is one that has FPS. This feature is essential because it must be deadly enough to take down a target that is up to 40 yards away. It is important to note that when a person is actually practicing, they are usually not so far away in their distance (normally 20-30 yards). On the other hand, when the person is actually hunting for game, they may not be so close up. So, the crossbow must have enough FPS to be effective.

Light Weight Enough to Carry for Hours at a time

Another important characteristic of this type of hunting tool is its weight. Though you want it heavy enough to yield the best performance, it cannot be too heavy since the hunter will most likely be traveling from one place to another for many hours at a time. The best types normally weigh 5.5 pounds and they can range to as much 8.1 pounds. Therefore, the person must be able to handle and manipulate. In some cases, people recommend wearing a padded crossbow should sling to help to eliminate any unnecessary problems.

Comes with a decent scope

Even though a person can buy a better scope at later time, ideally its best to buy one that has everything that you need. By buying a crossbow that is already built with everything, people can start hunting immediately instead of having to wait.

Quiet and Smooth in its Operation

To keep from scaring the prey away, the hunting tools used must be quite and smooth in operation. For instance, the cocking and latching must be dependable and not too loud.

Now, some people may say that you cannot have it all when searching for the most accurate hunting crossbow. However, there is nothing that says that one should not try to find the best. With this in mind, people can consider the top options on the 2016 list or they may review and look for the best features offered in the industry. The primary goal, however, is to find the most accurate hunting crossbow.

Types of bowfishing that can be done with a crossbow include wading, nightfishing, and big game fishing among others. Bowfishing with a crossbow is a fast-action sport that is not for those who are looking to simply catch and release. The aim of bowfishing is to kill.

Tools

Good crossbow equipment can cost anywhere from around $400 USD to well upwards of $1,000 USD. A good bow package comes complete with tools such as a scope and strong bolts. Crossbow fishing relies on bolts, barbed and tensioned arrows, to catch fish from the water. Expert crossbow fishers recommend investing in a line-safety system to prevent any accidental line snagging that may cause the bolt to snap backwards. As such, one should also invest in good glasses to protect the eyes and also to help the eyes see fish in the water. Investing in a reel is also recommended as well as wading boots for easy trekking in the waters. One of the best things about crossbow fishing is being able to fish without bait. There is absolutely no bait necessary in order to bowfish with a crossbow.

Location

The best crossbow fishing is typically done in warm waters. Freshwater locations such as lakes, ponds, and rivers are recommended as well as saltwater locations such as beaches, bays, and estuaries. In truth, any body of water may be used to bowfish with a crossbow as long as it is clear and shallow with heights rising to only between 3-4 feet.

Techniques

In order to get a shot at the best fish, daytime fishing is recommended, especially during spring when it is spawning time for most fish. Nighttime fishing is a little more challenging, but it has the advantage of availability any time throughout the year. Big game fishing should be done during the spring and summer seasons when fish are most active. Bowfishing with a crossbow requires a lot of practice in aiming for fast fish. When hunting around shallow waters, try to stay near tall weeds and grasses as they provide some type of cover. Avoid casting any shadows on the target fish by standing quite a distance away from it, between 10-15 feet. Aim low to compensate for the refraction of light in the water, and try to aim for the front half of the fish to target the vital organs such as the brain. This ensures a straight and successful kill. Practice aiming and shooting with your crossbow of choice continuously in order to get a good grip on your equipment.

All in all, bowfishing with a crossbow is a very rewarding and enjoyable sport to get into. It takes a great level of skill and dedication to become an expert in the craft. After all, it is pretty much hunting fish that swim at incredible speeds in the water. With good practice and training, that bolt will land between the target’s eyes, and you will see why bowfishing with a crossbow is the next big thing in the world of fishing and hunting.
